Are You Sparking Conversations on Social Media?

We are living in a world that is constantly operating across digital and social media platforms. That is why it is critical that pharma companies make sure they integrate effective digital marketing campaigns and solutions into their business plans. This includes social media, an important component of a successful digital strategy.

Pharma companies have to make sure they are doing everything they can to leverage social media for a variety of reasons. However, the most important reason is because pharma needs to be where their consumers and patients are and be a participant in the conversations that are happening online.

When health care professionals started to become active on social media almost ten years ago, there was rarely any classification from the Food and Drug Administration on how to use the various social media channels to effectively market and advertise. Since then, the the FDA has made updates to its guidelines for utilizing digital channels but it is imperative for pharma marketers to continuously stay informed to stay compliant with regulatory restrictions.

The rise of social media also coincides with the widespread usage of smartphones. More and more patients and healthcare professionals now rely on their mobile devices to access social media and medical websites to receive medical information, get advice from healthcare providers or support groups, and to seek out solutions to their various health concerns and challenges. As a result, pharma marketers have to know how to adapt and become agile to the changes in technology and media consumption to reach their customers where they are, when their ready, and with the content they need.

If you want to spark a conversation on social media, try the following:

  • Make sure you are using the appropriate platform. Test messaging across several platforms to find where your customers want to be reached. If you cannot get a particular message across on one, try another that will allow you to make the statement you want to make that gets your point across.
  • Brevity is key. Attention spans are short so be sure to make your message clear and succinct.
  • Cover all your bases. When you provide information on your social media accounts, do not leave out any relevant or important links and do not forget to include the advantages and risks of using a certain product or service.
