Why pharma companies should work with trends that go beyond the pill

Various technological developments are changing the way people experience healthcare — the choices they have, the way care gets delivered to them, and the extent to which they can personalize their treatments.

Pharma companies need to look beyond the pill when considering what people demand of healthcare.

The Financial Times recently published an interesting article that touches on this topic. The article discusses “digital disruptions” that have encouraged people to not turn to medications as their first choice in treatments and healthcare management. One example they give is a woman with Type 2 diabetes who began relying on a device to regularly monitor her blood sugar levels and offer her immediate advice depending on the readings; this approach has made her able to live without reliance on medicine.

This isn’t to say that medications are going away anytime soon, whether for diabetes or for other conditions. It only goes to show that people are searching for new ways to manage their care, and emerging technologies help them avoid relying only on doctors who prescribe them medications.

When patients look beyond the pill

For pharma companies to stay competitive, they need to work with these digital technologies, which can be useful both in tandem with medications or independently (with no need for pills at all). What are some of the actions that pharma companies need to undertake?

  • Invest in or collaborate with the kinds of enterprises that develop these technologies, many of them smaller start-ups.
  • Develop their own ways of helping patients monitor healthcare, receive professional advice remotely, and choose from among the treatment options, even those that don’t require medication.
  • Win over patient trust and loyalty, as people may be wary of relying on any solution (pill-based or not) that’s openly promoted by a big pharma company.

Going beyond the pill and embracing new digital solutions is key to pharma’s evolution and success.
