Disease Awareness and the Power of Social Media

We are living in a world where social media constantly surrounds us. Social media can ultimately infuse our entire perception of what is real. Some people question why a status on Facebook is important. They question why it is so important for someone to upload photographs on Instagram or Snapchat. Why should anyone care about a tweet on Twitter? Is there really a purpose for all of this social media talk? Was life better for us when we did not have a social media network?

Social media has the power to change so many things, including what people know about diseases. The internet gives us quick access to anything we need and, in turn, allows us to grow, better ourselves, and understand things that may have been difficult to learn using other methods.

People are no longer afraid to post videos and create statuses that tell their stories. A presence on social media allows people to become more aware of what is going on around them. A social media presence also changes the public’s perception of diseases and treatments. When we are active on social media and want to raise awareness about something, what do we do? We create a hashtag and hope it starts trending. We share videos and hope the videos go viral. We encourage others to not be afraid to share their own stories.

Raising awareness on various social media platforms will send a message so everyone’s attention will be grabbed. Once you have people’s attention, you will be able to discuss the issue in full detail. Life science organizations have a unique opportunity to help patients and caregivers share their experiences and raise awareness. Give your patients’ voices volume by hosting forums, organizing social discussions and so much more.
